What extra 'department' should we include in the simm?

Prior to our 'revamp' as it were, we were suppose to be slated with a Starfleet Corps of Engineers detachment as an extra tactical solution. No one has signed up as members of the SCE detachment but it did have the advantage (like a HAZARD team) that it was made up of crew members who also had primary functions while on the ship.

I was wondering if we were keeping that or if anyone had any ideas or some such. I'm a bit loathe to include a SFMC detachment to the simm in replacement of the SCE one should we decide upon something else. Don't get me wrong, I'm for the idea of marines (if the rank didn't give it away) but the fact is most ships have them now. When I first started simming it was a pleasant surprise because I wasn't a Star Trek fan by any stretch of the imagination. ST simming was the most available sci-fi RP setting however so marines opened a window for me.

However now I'm more surprised if ships don't have marines on board. The surprise has been replaced with bored expectation. That and the fact that marine applications drain applications away from much needed positions such as CMO and CSTO.

Fighters are a no because the ship spec doesn't include them.

Also this subject can always be brought into discussion whenever. It's not a closed case answer.

A poll is up too

Don't Marines and a HAZARD team fulfill the same mission? I am in the middle when it comes to Marines but apparently on Bravo Fleet Forum a lot of people are up in arms about them. Some of the Star Trek diehards are holding Star Trek canon like a bible when it comes to Marines on a starship and others are touting that this isn't exactly a canon simm.

Cows go moo, sheep go baa, fan boys complain. It's in every franchise where an idea comes in be it good or bad. Basically some people can't have their cake and eat it.

Also you're right Dan, the differences are mostly that HAZARD are drawn from the crew (I think?) and Marines are like the ENT Era MACOs; deployed onto a ship. Then you get the whole ground side stuff and then it all slips back into the fan boy stuff. Cure for that? Just say 'absence of evidence isn't the evidence of absence' when it comes to that soup of opinions.

After that anything said is just hot air.

Point is it's more for a show case thing where the end result is the same. It's more for personal preference than function.

My two cents is as we build up our numbers we should concentrate on building the core positions and as for a secondary team like Hazard team that can just be whoever is assigned for that mission that way everyone can get in on the act from time to time. I think if we can build I numbers up and get a lot of key positions filled with consistent rpers we can look at adding Marines or SCE teams. Like I said I am the new guy but thats my thoughts.

It's a pretty smart move to do so in my opinion. We've still got a lot of gaps in the roster, we don't even have any blue shirt PCs.

We may have a CMO coming on board soon so it depends on who gets there first.

For some reason having cadets on board appeals...
